Saraswati is known to be the goddess of speech, learning and knowledge. Those who learn music, needs to worship her as per Hindu belief as she blesses with the knowledge for everything.
In the Devipuran, many names of Saraswati are found. Such as Savitri, Gayatri, Sati, Lakshmi and Ambika. She is also known as Vagdevi, Vani, Sharda, Bharti, Veenapani, Vidyadhari, Sarvmangla and many more. She imparts knowledge.
Generally, musicians worship her a lot as she is believed to be the pioneer of rhythm, tone and melody. The seven notes in music, sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni are dedicated to her. That’s why she is also known as Svaratmika – the soul of music. Her imaginary appearance suggests, she plays the Veena, an Indian musical instrument. It provides peace by tranquilizing the body and soul.
The Markandeypuran says, Ashvatara (Naagraj) and his brother Kambaal learnt music from Saraswati. In the Devi Bhagwat, it is said that Saraswati is worshipped first among the Gods. So, whoever offers prayers to her, is blessed with enormous knowledge. She is worshipped on a special day every year, known as the Basant Panchmi.
Saraswati is most popular and worship able among the Writers, poets and musicians as she is believed to resurrect creativity. There are detailed procedure to offer prayers to Saraswati in the Yagyavalkya Vani Stotra and Vashisth Stotra compiled by the Yagyavalkya and Vashisth.
Valmiki is known as Adikavi or the eternal poet and could jot down the Ramayana only because of the blessings of Saraswati. Hindu mythology says, Saraswati resided in Valmiki those days. It is because she found Valmiki capable enough when she heard Valmiki reciting something knowledgeable.
Saraswati had also played a role in the Ramayana by influencing Kumbhkaran’s speech. When Kumbhkaran pleased Brahma to sought a boon to keep awake foe six month against one day sleep, she influenced her pledge by just the reverse. That was the reason, Kumbhkaran died.
Sage Jaimini once found the birds near the Vindhya reciting the Vedas, later he got to know the birds are suffering from some curse and because of Saraswati’s blessings, they are able to recite the Veda.
