What is the significance of making offerings to Shiva and the Shivaling?

Shiva is the third important God according to Hindu belief. People who desire to have a successful married life as that of Shiva and Parvati, offer prayers to Shiva and Shivaling. The Shivaling symbolizes the phallus, which is considered as a symbol of Shiva.

Mercury or parad or para in Hindi, is also known as Shivdhatu,or Shiva’s metal. In reality, it refers to Shiva’s semen. Shivaling are made from a different stones. But it is believed to possess divine qualities as it is made from mercury.
